FAQs

There is no single packaging material that is suitable for every product. The most appropriate packaging solution depends on factors such as product protection, safety, consumer use and the availability of collection and recycling systems.
At NIVEA, we continuously work to improve our packaging. Depending on the application, this may include increasing the use of recycled materials, improving recyclability, using paper- and cardboard-based materials from responsibly sourced origins, and exploring refill and reuse solutions where appropriate.

At NIVEA, we regularly assess our packaging in collaboration with independent external experts to better understand how packaging materials can be identified, sorted and recycled within existing recycling systems. We continuously work to improve recyclability through packaging design and material selection."

Different products require different packaging solutions to ensure product protection, safety and performance.
Depending on the application, NIVEA uses materials such as plastic, aluminium, paper and cardboard. We continuously evaluate these materials and look for opportunities to increase the use of recycled materials, improve recyclability and use responsibly sourced materials where appropriate."

At NIVEA, we believe that animal testing is not necessary to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of cosmetic products. For more than 40 years, Beiersdorf has been involved in the development and application of alternative testing methods. In 1992, Beiersdorf researchers contributed to the development of one of the first officially accepted alternative test methods without animal testing.
We support the continued development and global acceptance of alternative scientific methods and work with scientific experts, industry associations and other stakeholders to advance their recognition.

The marketing of cosmetic products tested on animals has been banned in the European Union since 2004, and since 2013 this has also applied to cosmetic ingredients.

As a result, all cosmetic products marketed in the EU must comply with the same legal requirements regarding animal testing. For this reason, NIVEA does not use claims such as "Cruelty Free" or "Not Tested on Animals" to describe products sold in the EU.

Instead, we believe in providing transparent information about our position on animal testing and our long-standing work in the development and promotion of alternative testing methods.

Vegan cosmetics are products that do not contain animal-derived ingredients. This includes skincare, body care and other cosmetic products.

Some commonly used cosmetic ingredients can be derived from substances such as beeswax, honey or milk. In vegan products, these ingredients are replaced with alternative ingredients.

To offer consumers more choice, NIVEA provides a wide range of vegan skincare products that do not contain animal-derived ingredients.

No. Ingredients of natural origin are not automatically biodegradable, and biodegradability depends on the specific properties of an ingredient.

When developing our skincare formulas, biodegradability is one of the aspects we take into account. We work to increase the use of biodegradable ingredients where appropriate and continuously improve our formulas over time.

Since 2023, all NIVEA product formulations worldwide have been free from microplastic according to the UNEP definition.
